From the Village

Had been in town for a full day, and was really elated. Work without adequate breaks, and the resentment just builds up. Finally had the chance to be on leave, since i was on an official biz assignment to town, and so i took a whole day leave instead.

First thoughts were my uni friends working there.. and really, i only to make one trip to see almost all of them. Had lunch with them, and work wasn't a common topic. Had nothing much to contribute anyway since i don't have the exposure. Not surprisingly, i am feeling a bit distant. Nevertheless, it was really nice to see them all.. since we haven't been clubbing together for almost a month. The only common thing left perhaps.

Left and went looking for my band colleagues working there as well. Left an hour later coz my friend had an scheduled appointment, and me, to get my assignment done.

Went to the co.'s secretarial services and had a document signed.. and that being the start of the transfer of responsibility. The sentence that struck me - ".. reasonable level of skill and knowledge..". That said, i really had plenty to catch up.

Intended to get my blackberry repaired, but i wasn't prepared. Found a fastfood restaurant and settled down with my netbook, and connected to the web using my mobile broadband. I still feel very impressed by the eee's batt. 9.5 hours! One day computing indeed. Never regretted, and after a year or so, the netbook is still doing fine. At least i don't accidentally pour tea into in.. like what i did to my current laptop. Since that day, the laptop was literally without keyboard. Wanted to do a back up of my BB's data, and also to find the nearest teleco, but ended up msn-ing instead. LOL.. it was a very nice environment.. while people were scurrying around working, i was the most eecc of the lot. Well.. let me be, since i seldom had the time to eecc le.. lol.

Got my old BB changed since the keypad was faulty. Luckily it was still under warranty.. lol.. and so i got a replacement set. I could say the teleco had offered a very good service indeed - the orange colour teleco. Not only did they got my phone replaced, they also helped me transfer the data to my new BB, plus factory reset the old one. Of coz, it took really very long, and in the end didn't have enough time to have dinner with my friend.

Called for back up, and had dinner at Itacho Sushi. It was my 1st time there, and the experience was great. The food there was fresh (and ex), some being air freighted over on the same day. The best came from the $7.20 a piece sushi (which i forgot the name already, and that i only had enough budget for a piece.. lol), and the not so good came from the $0.40 a piece (which i had 4 pieces). LOL.. price do make the difference. Didn't rake up too much for a meal, unlike the $45 per pax jap food spree at sakae the other time. Shocked leh.. lol.. all becoz we thought the $10 discount voucher machiam like $100 like that.. lol.

Food was nice, and so was the beering afterwards. German beer is still the best, and it's been a long time since i last drank. I won't drink if i am driving.. so the opportunity to drink dwindled. Need time to unwind, coz work is too stressful. I had much to accomplish for a normal working day, and not only that, i had to find time to improve myself. Plus more time to improve the co. as a whole. That is really very stressful.

It was as if i was from the village, going to the big city to experience the city life. It was very different. From what they wore, it was already miles apart. Suddenly everyone seems to be the same. At the village, one can easily tell who is the boss and who are the workers from their attire.. but not in town. I kept thinking of what it might have been if i just find a job that is compatible to that degree of mine.. just that 'if'.

And so work resumes, and plenty were left for me. LOL.. i am glad, coz a high percentage of my work translate into revenue .. unlike some that just waste time wandering around. So in the end i was back today to KS.. lol.. as expected. Just kind of irritating to hear people saying how tired they are for just that done. I was expecting the backlog to clear one leh.. Yet it is ok. I had my break, and i am recharged, ready to go back to the village to work.

太委屈

Saturday was a rather bad day.

Early in the morning, a customer chute pattern. It was our standard (actually an industrial standard) to charge service for any rendered, and yet i was accused of trying to cheat him. What is all the shit about transparency? I conveyed the information even before i started doing, so as to aid him in making an informed choice.. and this is what i get. I hate this feeling. I hate it when i know i am 100% right, and yet people refuse to believe. Serve me right for being so clear. I might just as well do everything and charge it as part of the item. So he refused to believe me.. and so he complained to the manager.. and got the same answer. Then they always say "i everytime come leh".. ya.. and don't even know the charges? You everytime come, i everytime do lor. I even had to apologised to him.. so as not to escalate into a full blown confrontation. I said sorry.. sorry for being so clear. Customer service hor.

Deep down, it was a very awful feeling. For what did i have to enter this line, for something which i could never imagine myself doing? It was as if i was silly enough not to turn and run. I could always pick a job that i feel will suit my personality.. but no, i didn't.

Yet after everything, the customer didn't even bothered to apologised. Becoz they think they are always right. But for the sake of revenue, what else can i do? They are plenty like them, some even worse. I've swallowed my pride for yet another time.

Maybe, just maybe.. someone somewhere somehow helped him once for free.. just maybe. IMO, they are spoiling the market. Simple as that. If it is reasonable, we should charge.. becoz this is something for something (money for service). Or we shouldn't charge if it is our mistake. To do a favour isn't doing us much favour. What if our manpower is tied up? This is really not logical. To argue that one is a regular customer so as to receive such above premium treatment isn't justified. That is to say, biz is for profit that is a fact. Of coz, there are some customers which we really don't mind helping.. becoz they deserved the value-add from us. And they, don't demand from us.

Was rather upset, and feeling very tired - both physically and mentally. The stock check was done, and finally things can more or less return to normal. I am glad, but not delighted.

Colleague on leave, and the rest work half day on saturdays. Only the 2 of us were left tending the shop. Another customer took the opportunity to pilfer something by distracting me with all kinds of questions and making me showing him all sorts of samples. I guess i was still upset with the incident that i wasn't really paying attention. In the end he just left with the goods without paying. Sigh. It seems that everything was coming for me. And that customers are always right. Service sector.. what to do?

Really super sian at that point.. to still be professional when faced with setbacks is really difficult. To say is easy.. but really very difficult to do. Sadly, there isn't any opportunity for me to chute pattern. Customers keep coming, and i had to perform.. if not there will be more mistakes. In the end i had the goods lost counted on my account.. to serve as a reminder. There won't be a next time.

So i endured till late evening. The vader seems to sense something was not right.. and he offered me quite a bit of guidance. He said high blood pressure is very common for people working in this line and so i need to learn how to relax. How to relax lei.. sigh. When people come and started queuing, and everyone wants their orders to be processed first, one can still float around and do things in an eecc manner meh? Relax leh. We are not dentist lor.. we don't go by appointments. But what he said was right.. i was really boiling blood every other day lor.. sooner or later will explode.

At least the day ended a bit better. Actually there are plenty of good customers.. only a few bad ones. But it is usually the bad ones that leaves a lasting impression.. and which of coz, what goes round comes around. 己所不欲, 勿施于人.

Pre-Audit

Work is relentless for the past 2 weeks.. and thus i haven't had a break till now. Bulk of it was from inventory management.. and counting physical stock is a very tedious job - especially when there are thousands of items to count.

So i counted, and counted.. then 3 pallets of consignments came. Took me quite a bit of time to unpack, and then slot them to their respective shelves, update the stock cards, and finally re-check the total quantity. Introduced the a new version of stock card as part of the new inventory system.. and i followed much during my NS. So glad that at least not all the 6 months are wasted. Now all left is for the people to act on it.. which of coz is the most difficult part.

Just as i thought i was done, another 2 pallets came in.. i was so darn demoralised. All these consignments were due to a fall in euros and also coz the suppliers are going to have another price increase. Sian was don't know when i assumed that part of the inventory.. and hence it was my duty to put it in order. Kind enough was help that was offered.. yet too many cooks spoil the soup. I just had to do it to be able to make the change.

Finally all was done, and just before the audit scheduled this week. But the end of one task signals the start of another. During my schooling days, i have been preparing the inventory list.. and by now, it was the 5th time i am preparing this. Not really an enjoyable task (that's why i am blogging now instead of preparing the list) as it is very tedious too.

Hopefully the audit would be go on smoothly, and i hoped to have my weekend soon. Working consecutive for 20 days is kind of hell-ish.. and the KO time for sunday is even worse than that of normal working days.

Wondered what is with all the other staff.. coz i even had to submit my own appointment letter to the co.'s secretary. And with that, my appointment is official.. except that i have yet prepare the notice of appointment. So it was again on paper only. Regardless, i no longer have excuses to bo chup.

As part of the plan, the previous mech was re-hired. Very impressive skill and speed.. much better than the current chief mech.. and now i know why the vader only praise him. I am impressed indeed.

Another had to wait till aug before coming over.. and with that, the shortage will be solved. IMO, there will be too many indeed.. so either there are more revenue generating activities, or there will be some selections going on soon.

Cow

Work manifested itself so badly that i wondered what i am doing.

Could be better, could be worse.

Clocked a 78 hour work week for the previous week, and my backlog keeps adding. And the choice-less situation was that all uninterested employees already had their job scope defined.. either by a very generous vader or that the defined it by themselves.

That leaves all the rest of the job to the cow and friends. All other jobs = infinite. So long as the situation calls for, the cow will have to obey. Ironically, i am the one typing my own appointment letter.. lol.. Well.. at least it is a very interesting work, with a tremendous amount of free work-out provided for. And the most wonderful part is that the cow will get paid.. so that someday it will get to have enough money to buy the 1.2k fish at rws. I'm being sarcastic.

I wonder whether being hopeful makes things much difficult. To accept what there is to accept, and perhaps nothing else matters. Things won't last forever.. becoz a lifetime is not forever.

Well.. regardless of the outcome, i will have no choice. That is, if i want to remain status quo.

At least with this, every other thing else will be considered a luxury (Including the 1.2k fish).

LOL.. i guess the fish really is very huat hor..

Actually i know what is causing all these issues at work. Lousy teamwork, bo system and papaya syndrome. The papaya syndrome will cause people to over-rate themselves, and therefore ignore team play and create their own system. Essentially, they all mean the same thing. Seriously, it can work in the past, where information isn't that readily available. To Think that they can win with that little bit of knowledge will be so wrong. And to not have any sense of danger thinking that the job position itself is woon woon jiat been hoon would be so wrong too. Please lah.. this is the age of the internet (and iphone) (and BB too =) ).. what is there to not know? But sadly, the cow is not easily replaceable. But then again, all is not lost.. at least there are cheaper ones out there (and some are better too).

It was 18 months on.. and looking back, i've changed a lot.. and perhaps this is not who i want to be, it was nevertheless more relevant to my work. I could have asked for less of myself.. simply bo chup.. but i still remember that i have a dream. A dream slightly further now.. so that i can see the whole picture.
