Last sat was the A&C showcase, and this performance was one of the least prepared by me.
Rushed to HQ @ tampines after work, and was glad i had kuti chia this time round. Reached within 30 mins, and was.. just in time for dinner.. lol.
The actual performance came, and with the stage at HQ, the same acoustic problem plagued me again. Was feeling very muffled from my position and i couldn't hear the band as a whole. Yet the sections sounded very clear.. perhaps too clear till there wasn't much blending into. In any case, this wasn't the same as what it sounded some years back. I could still remember, and still touched by it.
What really 'woke' me up was the combine performance with the brassband. They were just so good, and they had improved so much. With them, i finally had a section, and the full chord sounded nice and full.. plus the bass and all.. it sounded like a band at least. To emphasize on quality rather than quantity can sometimes be wrong. Certain things, you'll need the quantity no matter what. Get the numbers 1st before deciding what to do with each of them. Without the numbers, what can one do? The is the same problem facing the band. What is the point when there is no one? The spare instruments are just sitting around depreciating. So when they wanted to set a minimum requirement for each player, they are actually killing the band.
I enjoyed the performance as i did, and i hoped the audience would too. Amid all these, there was a tinge of disappointment. Perhaps of what i've realised, perhaps of something else.. and actually i was hoping, yet hope was only what i can do.
All done, and was to send the instruments back to boonlay. Had significantly less to shift back, and more to help. All was done rather quickly, just that the journey took quite some time. Went for supper after everything, and by the time i was done, it was already 1.30am. Really quite tired to be driving, and was thankful when i reached home.
Actually i felt so fortunate that day.. though i was really tired. In some ways, i am thankful for the challenges that were thrown at me, and was so glad i can overcome.
Rather than 苦中一点甜, it was more of 甜中一点苦. I hoped i can face each and every challenges in this manner, and really.. 莲子糖 seems nicer!
